EM233: IBITA advanced course: "Knowing the components of the functional gesture to re-educate advanced ADLs in the recovery process after central injury - Bobath Concept"

The Bobath concept is a problem-solving approach aimed at assessing and treating people with movement, postural control and function disorders caused by a central nervous system injury. This approach to the rehabilitation of adults with central neurological damage originates from the work of Berta and Karel Bobath and has evolved over the last 60 years. The rationale for its application is rooted in current neuroscientific knowledge relating to motor control, motor learning, neural and muscular plasticity and current biomechanical knowledge. In the Bobath Concept, the objective of the treatment is to optimize the functional competence of the patient and the knowledge of the typical motor patterns with which the function is realized is fundamental for the therapist who is called to evaluate the patient's motor skills, to recognize atypical patterns, to define the impairment, to produce working hypotheses. The course aims to deepen the knowledge of some advanced ADLs, important for patient independence, present and measured as significant indicators in many outcome scales but often not included in basic courses or in general in neurological training courses.

Specific objectives:

- Promote the evidence based approach based on updated literature
- To deepen the knowledge of the typical functional movement and to refine the clinical observation skills
- Know the biomechanical prerequisites and neurophysiological skills underlying the functional gesture in particular of advanced ADLs such as walking outdoors, reaching standing, overcoming obstacles / climbing stairs, reaching the ground and climbing from the ground, getting dressed / undress
- Know the scales of ourtcome which include these functional parameters
- Recognize the atypical movement and compensatory strategies used in the different neurological conditions faced
- Acquire facilitation techniques (manual, verbal and environmental) to support functional recovery after central injury
- Refine manual skills and implement technical competence at an advanced level
- Support the comparison and discussion between participants and teachers and train clinical reasoning
