EM186: Management of People with Nerve related MSK conditions

The aim of this course is to present the latest theory and evidence around the assessment and management of people with the more common nerve related MSK conditions. It aims to develop the practical skills and clinical reasoning of participants when managing people with these conditions.

Theoretical aspects of the course will include an exploration of some of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these disorders, considering some of the latest evidence from both laboratory and in vivo studies.

Discussion and the application of clinical tests to assess people with these disorders will take place and help to better understand their role in identifying these conditions or specific pathomechanismsthat may be responsible. In addition, considerations around validity and repeatability of such tests will be discussed. All participants will practice these tests and be given feedback on how to optimise such skills, with both tutor and peer based feedback.

The final part of this course will explore the management of patients with nerve related MSK pain. The evidence around therapeutic effects as well as the efficacy of management strategies will be discussed. Case studies will be used so that participants can plan and carry out appropriate management techniques. Practical skills will again be reviewed to enhance such skills via both peer and tutor led feedback.

At the end of the course, participants will have an understanding of potential underlying mechanisms for nerve related MSK disorders and how to assess such mechanisms using clinical tests. Participants will enhance their practical skills of both assessment and management techniques and have appropriate clinical reasoning processes associated with the use of such techniques.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course participants will

• Have an enhanced knowledge of the epidemiology and pathological mechanisms associated with nerve related MSK conditions.

• Be confident with the understanding, relevance, interpretation and the handling of appropriate clinical tests for people with nerve related MSK conditions.

• Understand the available evidence for the efficacy and therapeutic effects of management strategies for people with these conditions

• Have enhanced clinical reasoning to be able to plan and implement management techniques and monitor outcomes for people with these conditions.
